Portnoy, Sheehan, MacAlpine, Sherinian: Live In TokyoOn September 3, 2013, Eagle Rock Entertainment will release “Live In Tokyo” by PORTNOY SHEEHAN MACALPINE SHERINIAN on DVD, Blu-ray, 2CD and digital audio and video formats.

“Live In Tokyo” was filmed/recorded on November 14, 2012 at Zepp Tokyo. This 95-minute concert is the first release of material from the PSMS supergroup, and it showcases a wide range of instrumental performances from each of the members’ careers and collaborations.

Drummer Mike Portnoy, bassist Billy Sheehan, guitarist Tony MacAlpine and keyboardist Derek Sherinian brought their collective strengths to Japan this past fall. The result was a 16-track deep cornucopia of the members’ individual highlights. The group unleashed a fierce storm of sonic musicianship on songs such as “Shy Boy” from Sheehan’s band TALAS, MacAlpine’s “The Stranger”, Sherinian’s “Apocalypse 1470 B.C.” and DREAM THEATER’s “A Change Of Seasons: The Crimson Sunrise”. The DVD and Blu-ray also offer an exclusive peek at this production with a behind-the-scenes featurette.

Mike Portnoy, Billy Sheehan, Tony MacAlpine and Derek Sherinian will join forces this fall embarking on an extended tour of Europe and Asia.

The virtuoso band will play an all-instrumental set consisting of material from each of their solo records and their previous collaborations as well as classic instrumental covers and extended solo spots. Mike Portnoy formed the lineup to perfom at two drum events at the NAMM show last January. Due to overwhelming response that band has decided to take their show on tour.

“I knew when assembling this lineup that it would be a magical musical experience that would be a blast for us as well as the fans!  I can’t wait to play again with these tremendous musicians and share the experience with you all at these special shows!” says Portnoy.

London UK Show Review by
February 27, 2012

Tony MacAlpine at The Underworld, London UK. Photo by Alissa Ordabai“Currently in Europe road-testing his new self-titled album, the guitar virtuoso Tony MacAlpine is proving yet again that his solo records remain his most exciting work. After keeping busy touring as a member of Steve Vai’s live band, collaborating with Billy Sheehan, Virgil Donati, and other hotshots on prog-rock projects, as well as releasing jazz fusion CDs, the veteran of high-tech guitar is now back to being the grand master of his own creative universe.

Comprised of Angra drummer Aquiles Priester, Bjorn Englen on the bass (who also plays for Yngwie Malmsteen) and a 23 year-old up-and-comer Nili Brosh on the second guitar, MacAlpine’s live band is a tough-sounding combination of ferocity and discipline – something Londoners got a taste of first-hand at the Underworld club last Wednesday.

Not interested in overwhelming or intimidating his audience (which on the night – incidentally – included Herman Li from Dragonforce as well as a whole bunch of aspiring local shredders), MacAlpine made this show at once accessible and utterly futuristic, combining his instant-grip melodies with the angular punch of riff-heavy prog-rock.”
